The Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course was designed by Peter Thompson, five times British Open Champion. The design is reminiscent of a traditional British Parkland course with some interesting “links” additions.
The short 6969-yard course is missing a set of the back (black) tees, but it more than makes up for the lack of distance with the clever use of many of the elements from a British links style course. Bumpy fairways, pot bunkers, and closely mowed areas around the greens feature through the site.
The par 4, 4th is an absolute brute of a hole, playing at 440 yards from the back tees and uphill all the way. Not a hole for the faint hearted. This hole is an exception as the key to scoring well points more towards accuracy than length. Especially as there are 94 well-placed bunkers to catch any stray shots. There are many streams and lakes throughout the 18 holes, but not all are in play. The course offers all levels of golfers an enjoyable round with a chance to score well.
All 18 holes blend well together to offer a unique challenge in a natural setting. The Royal Chiang Mai course has a driving range and two practice putting and chipping greens. There is a pro shop and the restaurant serves international gourmet cuisine including Thai, Japanese, Korean and European food.
